Dolphin Facts and Whale Tales – A MareCet Lecture Series: Around the World in 90 Minutes – A Look at Various Cultures’ Association with Marine Mammals

Talk title: Around the World in 90 Minutes – A Look at Various Cultures’ Association with Marine Mammals

SYNOPSIS:

Marine mammals, especially whales, dolphins and dugongs, have long intrigued mankind. From the ancient days of the Greek civilizations, through the centuries that followed, and up to modern times, these animals have, in one way or another, found their place in our human society. There are countless myths, legends, folklore, beliefs and practices associated with marine mammals in all corners of our globe. Pictures of dolphins adorn the ancient Palace of Knossos in Crete, Greece, fishermen in Vietnam worship whales in special whale temples, and the river dolphin in Pakistan carries with it a tale of a young couple in love living on either side of the Indus River – just to name a few of these. In this lecture, we present to you some of these stories from places such as West Africa, Alaska, Vietnam, Indonesia, New Zealand, India, Hawai’i and even Malaysia. So come join us, as we take a quick spin around the world to explore the tales of these magnificent creatures!

**This lecture is a fundraiser for MareCet – ALL proceeds go towards our efforts in marine mammal research and conservation.
