MESYM Documentary Night #6: Pandora’s Promise

MESYM’s Documentary Night is held every 2nd Tuesday of each month. Everyone is invited to come hang out, watch a documentary, meet like-minded friends and take part in the discussion. Admission is free!

In partnership with EcoKnights just before the upcoming 6th Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival starting on October 11th, we are screening Pandora’s Promise, a 2013 documentary film directed by Robert Stone. It presents an argument that nuclear energy, typically feared by environmentalists, is in fact the only feasible way of meeting humanity’s growing need for energy while also addressing the serious problem of climate change.

We have also invited Dato’ Dr. Ronald S. McCoy, a prominent advocate against nuclear energy, to comment on the movie and to provide a Malaysian perspective on this issue.

A life member of the Malaysian Medical Association who served as its president in 1995, Dr McCoy is a founder member of Malaysian Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (MPPNW) and founder president of its successor organisation, Malaysian Physicians for Social Responsibility (MPSR). He is also a founder member and chairman of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW, a federation of 62 national physicians’ groups representing 200,000 doctors world wide, dedicated to the elimination of nuclear weapons). Dr McCoy was a member of the Canberra Commission on the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, a group of seventeen distinguished and eminent persons from 12 countries appointed by former Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating to propose practical measures for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

Impact Partners and CNN Films present PANDORA’S PROMISE, the groundbreaking new film by Academy-Award®-nominated director Robert Stone.

The atomic bomb and meltdowns like Fukushima have made nuclear power synonymous with global disaster. But what if we’ve got nuclear power wrong? An audience favorite at the Sundance Film Festival, PANDORA’S PROMISE asks whether the one technology we fear most could save our planet from a climate catastrophe, while providing the energy needed to lift billions of people in the developing world out of poverty. In his controversial new film, Stone tells the intensely personal stories of environmentalists and energy experts who have undergone a radical conversion from being fiercely anti to strongly pro-nuclear energy, risking their careers and reputations in the process. Stone exposes this controversy within the environmental movement head-on with stories of defection by heavy weights including Stewart Brand, Richard Rhodes, Gwyneth Cravens, Mark Lynas and Michael Shellenberger.

Undaunted and fearlessly independent, PANDORA’S PROMISE is a landmark work that is forever changing the conversation about the myths and science behind this deeply emotional and polarizing issue.

Update (after the event)
