[Mindset Public Talk] Roundtable on academia and palm oil sustainability

The format December’s Mindset Public Event will be slightly different: a roundtable with five distinguished panelists to discuss about about academia and environmental sustainability in the palm oil industry. The panelists are Dr Sune Hansen (UTM Palm Oil Research Centre), Dr Hariskrishna Kulaveerasingam (Sime Darby R&D), Dr Sanath Kumaran(RSPO), Dr Hawati Janor (UKM’s School of Management), and Yasmin Rashid (Ecoknights). The co-organizer and moderator of the roundtable is Dr Rory Padfield (UTM). The roundtable will be very interactive, including ~ 45 min of Q&A with the floor; afterwards, there will be refreshments and an opportunity for further discussion. The event will take place on 9 Dec at 6 pm at KLTC, Jalan Conlay (more details below and in the attached flyer).

This event is one of Mindset’s Public Talks – monthly events aimed to a general audience including academics, government officers, NGOs, people from the relevant industries, and any person with an interest on environmental issues. We are looking forward to see you in this and future Mindset events.

About the Roundtable

With a global vegetable oil market share of more than 35% by weight, palm oil is the most produced vegetable oil in the world. Local and global sustainability impacts associated with palm oil production have been raised, especially in the two largest producing countries of Malaysia and Indonesia. With the prospect of continued high demand in the largest importing countries and regions (India, China and Europe) and development of new plantations in frontier areas (West Africa and Latin America), identifying strategies for sustainable palm oil production represents an important and necessary step forward. In light of the rising interest in academic research on palm oil related topics in recent years, this interactive session aims to discuss the following question: How can academia support the sustainable development of the palm oil industry?
