MNS SB Flora Group’s Saturday Afternoon Activity with 2 sessions
2 Sessions:   Session 1: EVOLUTION HISTORY OF PLANTS: THE CONQUEST OF LAND AND THE INVENTION OF WOOD by Dr Jean Weber   Dr Weber is a French Biology lecturer, researcher and member of the MNS since 2014. His field of interest is fungal ecology in lowland dipterocarp forests.   Jean Weber worked between 2008 and 2013 as Fellow Researcher at the Institute of Tropical Forest and Forests Products – Universiti Putra Malaysia and as Senior Lecturer at Pusat Asasi Sains Pertanian, Universiti Putra Malaysia between 2013 and 2016. Currently a consultant for the management and mapping of tree diversity in urban communities.   Intro: Plants have deeply transformed our planet and our landscapes during a long evolutionary history. While photosynthetic organisms appeared approximately 3.2 to 3.5 billion years ago, land colonization by plants “only” occurred 450 million years ago. This colonization was made possible due to new collaborations between plants and microorganisms as well as by the invention of wood that was essential to the adaptation of plants to dry and infertile environments. Knowing these key processes in plants history invites to a better appreciation of the beauty of nature and permits to discuss the advantage and limits of current landscape management practices for the maintenance of natural equilibriums and fertility.   Session 2: PLANT SEEDLINGS   This is an outdoor activity to be conducted at the MNS Nursery at the end of Session 1. Join us as we plant seedlings that had been collected, watering, weeding, etc. or just to network with your fellow “Greenies”. Do bring along your drinking water, insect repellant, hat, gardening tools and gloves.first presentation Post
