Trail Mix: A Public Forum on Community-Based Trail Initiatives in Malaysia

#mytrailmix2017

Forest trails have always been a big part of people’s lives in Malaysia, but in recent years they have become a significant social movement especially for urban forests which have a huge role to play in making cities liveable. There are many community groups that have been building and sustaining forest trails and using them as platforms for environmental awareness and outreach. This Forum is about bringing groups that are working in isolation together for a dynamic knowledge sharing and brainstorming session! It will feature experience sharing from individuals that have been involved in pioneering, maintaining and mapping forest trails in Greater KL and Penang. Discussion sessions will explore the challenges and opportunities currently being faced, as well as what can be done to mainstream public participation in the management of urban green spaces.

This will be an informal forum targetted at a cross section of the public: participants from CBOs, NGOs, local government, state government and private sector are welcome to attend to share their ideas and explore opportunities for collaboration. Held over two days, the first session on Saturday 11 November 2017 will start with lunch at 12:30PM, followed by presentations and a mediated brainstorming session.

The 2nd Session on Sunday 12 November 2017 is a more targetted skills-building session for those groups that want to discuss improving current best practice in trail design, maintenance, communications and management, as well as community engagement. It will be led by experienced trail designers and managers. This session is meant for those groups active on the ground, as well as a primer for those that are beginning this work.

As places are limited, participants must register to confirm a place.
