Two funded MSc positions for Sun Bear Research at Sunway University, Malaysia

We have 2  funded MSc (in Life Sciences by Research) positions in the Department of Biological Sciences, Sunway University, Malaysia, starting in March 2016.

The broad focus of the study is to assess sun bear distribution and population genetic structure in Malaysia to identify landscape characteristics most likely to support sun bears and permit connectivity among populations.

The projects will involve:

  1. Developing markers to assess genetic variation within and between populations in the Malayan Sun Bear
  2. Testing methodologies for collecting non-invasive genetic samples from wild sun bears and for population density estimation

Scholarships include a tuition fee waiver, a monthly stipend of RM 2000, and a research budget. Applicants should be Malaysian citizens, highly motivated, with an interest in conservation science.   A BSc Honours degree is required to enrol in Sunway University’s MSc program. For the genetics study, lab experience in molecular biology/biotechnology is preferred.  For the field study, applicants with experience or motivation to conduct ecological research in the field is needed.  Phone enquiries welcome.
