Vacancy: Communications Officer

Here’s an opportunity for a young Malaysian to join the exciting world of wildlife conservation and to be a part of Malaysia’s tiger conservation efforts!

The Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers (MYCAT) is an alliance of the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), TRAFFIC Southeast Asia, Wildlife Conservation Society-Malaysia Programme and WWF-Malaysia, supported by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia for joint implementation of the National Tiger Conservation Action Plan for Malaysia.

The suitable candidate will have:

  • Malaysian citizenship
  • a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Marketing or equivalent
  • a minimum of two years’ experience in the communication field (e.g. journalism, marketing, public relations)
  • high proficiency in English and Bahasa Malaysia
  • excellent writing and organisational skills
  • computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Power Point, etc)
  • energetic, creative, independent, detail-oriented and responsible personality and good work ethics
  • knowledge/interest in the conservation field an advantage
  • ability to work closely with government and non-government partners
  • ability to communicate well with corporate donors and general public

I. MAJOR FUNCTIONS
The Communications Officer will join the MYCAT Secretariat’s Office (SO) and will work closely with the government and MYCAT NGO partners. The main purpose of the position is to provide communications support to meet MYCAT conservation objectives. The major functions are:

  1.  To facilitate communications within MYCAT partners and between MYCAT and the public, government partners, donors and media
  2.  To liaise with stakeholders for implementation of the MYCAT joint projects
  3.  To produce communication materials to enhance MYCAT projects, stakeholder buy-in and public awareness

Training will be provided.

II. SPECIFIC DUTIES

The Communications Officer’s responsibilities in the first year are:

1. Communications

  • To help develop, implement and evaluate MYCAT communications strategy and work plan
  • To liaise with relevant government agencies, partner NGOs, and other stakeholders for implementation of MYCAT joint projects
  • To prepare press releases, feature stories, proposals, project reports, annual reports and other communications resource materials with support from others
  • To coordinate press conferences, publicity and other media events
  • To edit documents drafted by others
  • To maintain the MYCAT e-group and Facebook page
  • To update information on the webpage
  • To foster good working relationships with the existing partners and develop new ones
  • To liaise with donors and assist in fund raising
  • To maintain database on communication resources and media outputs

2. General administrative support

  • To assist in handling daily office operations

Duration: Full-time contractual position starting as soon as possible, renewable annually
