The growing popularity of urban gardening and urban farming is a testament that the future of food lies in how we can best appropriate whatever space available for the purpose of feeding people. In light of rising food prices and a booming global population, food growing should also be returned to the hands of the public, where people take more responsibility in meeting their own food demands.
#BetterCities talk series #6 will look at the limitations and potentialities of expanding urban gardening in Kuala Lumpur. Prior to the panel discussion, there will be an activity inspired by ‘The Public Kitchen’ (http://

Each year, the budget boasts about an increase in the number of social housing, but quantity is not a sufficient way to deal with the underlying issues of social housing.
Under maintenance, poor design and inefficient social facilities result in producing four-walled homes, but not habitats which enhance the well-beings of its occupants.
How could design be critically re-imagined for the existing image and expectation of social housing in Malaysia? How can good design and architecture uplift and enhance relationships within a social housing community?

This will be the fourth and final installment of #BetterCities Talks for 2013! November 30 will also mark the 2nd year anniversary of our talk series (we started from humble beginnings and a partnership with the British Council Malaysia at Pecha Kucha Vol. 13 on the theme, “Exploring New Possibilities for Our City”). Please join us for an afternoon of sharing and networking.
Our city is transforming before our eyes, deprived areas are given a new breath of life which changes its original context but in some cases provides opportunity for community and economic growth. In this talk #BetterCities will look at the role of place-making in the evolving urban landscape. Is it possible for the process of urban regeneration to not only take the past into consideration but also how it can interact with future communities?
The talk will be hosted and moderated by Yasmin Lane, who is currently the Research Lead at #BetterCities. #BetterCities has invited speakers to share insights on the topic from a commercial, policy and heritage perspective.
