Our activity includes both projects in Malaysia and projects and campaigns in Europe, especially in Switzerland (see Projects). An important element in our work is running a publicly accessible documentation centre at our organisation's headquarters in Basel.
PROJECTS
Mapping the Penan Rainforests on Borneo
For twenty years, the Penan in the Malaysian federal state of Sarawak have been warding off the destruction of their rainforests with peaceful blockades of logging roads. Despite that, the timber industry is penetrating ever deeper into their territories. Now they want to try one last time to stop the loggers, with the help of land-rights litigation. Maps of their territories, which they are producing under the auspices of Bruno Manser Fund’s “community mapping” project, are being used as evidence in this process. MORE
Schooling for the Penan nomads
The children of the Penan nomads in the district around the Pulong Tau National Park need access to schooling. They do not want to remain cut off from the modern age and want to learn to read, write and do sums in their own language. To cater for this need, the Penan have decided to build a pre-school and to run it themselves. MORE
The campaign to protect the primeval forest in Sarawak
More than 90% of Sarawak’s primeval forests have already been damaged by logging, yet there is still no sign of an appropriate change in official forest policy. This is a situation in which it is important for the Penan, who are actively trying to protect what is left of the forest, to be heard around the world. The Bruno Manser Fund is transmitting their message to the public worldwide. MORE
The Association
The full name of the Bruno Manser Fund (BMF) includes the mention of “association for the peoples of the rainforest”. It is a non-profit association based in Basel (Switzerland). A Board with six members bears strategic responsibility for it, whilst its operational activity is in the hands of its director and a team of employees and volunteer helpers. Its offices were located at “Heuberg 25”, a house in the centre of the city of Basel in rooms where Bruno Manser himself used to live in the 1990s. Since October 2008 the BMF is situated in the Socinstrasse 37.
The Bruno Manser Fund is financed from donations from private individuals, foundations and selected businesses. Individual projects also receive support from the public funds (at the communal and cantonal level).
