Earth Lodge is not merely a business, it is a conservation project. We hope you will help contribute to the conservation of Ulu Muda.
Earth Lodge
Set in the midst of tall forest trees and on the banks of two rivers, the larger Sungai Muda and Sungai Labua, Earth Lodge is a small ecolodge with only 14 rooms. We intend to stay small. Being small will help us reduce the lodge’s impact on the fragile environment and ensure the site retains the isolated and tranquil feel.
Our rooms are currently basic and they all have attached bathrooms with shower, a proper sitting toilet and a spacious balcony overlooking the forest. Of the 14 rooms, 4 are larger basic rooms that can accommodate up to 6 guests in a room while the other rooms should comfortably accommodate 2 guests to a room. By the way, we are in the process of upgrading the rooms.
The Makan Place (makan means “eat” in Malay) is our spacious dining area. It is the main focal point for guests as it doubles up as our meeting point. A place to socialize, chat and compare notes of the days activities.
Because we are located some 14km from civilization, we think the remoteness and the lack of modern communication provides a nice respite for most guests. We certainly like it.
Our packages are not packed with activities. We want our guests to enjoy Earth Lodge, spend time dipping in the clear cool rivers, enjoy the abundant wildlife including interesting birds and basically enjoying the forest. When its time for some activities, guests can choose from several. They include wildlife watching from a hide, wildlife cruise, visiting caves and tubing on the river. Otherwise just laze around doing whatever you fancy.
Ulu Muda
Earth Lodge is set in a remote lush tropical rainforest located in the northern Peninsular Malaysia state of Kedah. The 160,000 hectares of Greater Ulu Muda is situated along the state’s eastern interior border with the Thai province of Yala. It is an off-the-beaten-track area and practically unknown to most people including Malaysian! Comprising of several forest reserves, Ulu Muda Forest Reserve is by far the largest at 105,000 hectares. Lowland Dipterocarp Forest, Hill Dipterocarp Forest and the Upper Hill Dipterocarp Forest are the forest types found here with an elevation range from about 97m to the highest point of 1256m. The area is particularly known as an important site for Malaysia’s mega fauna. The main suspects usually caught on our camera traps are the Asian elephant, Malaysian tapir, sambar deer, barking deer and wild boar. The other large mammals known to call Ulu Muda home are the gaur, tiger and panther.

less...Earth Lodge is a small ecolodge and field research center located about 14km by boat in the remote jungles of Ulu Muda in the Malaysian State of Kedah. We intend to stay small. Located in the eastern frontiers of the state bordering Thailand, the Greater Ulu Muda area is a particularly important site for Malaysia’s mega fauna and is a crucial water catchment area. Much of its interior is still unexplored. Ulu Muda is still relatively unknown even to Malaysians and is definitely an off-the-beaten-track destination.
The main aim of Earth Lodge and the Ulu Muda Field Research Center is to increase knowledge of Ulu Muda’s natural history and to raise awareness of the conservation value of this important natural treasure with the bigger objective of securing better protection and management for the area. We also intend to manage and run Earth Lodge with the smallest ecological footprint by constantly trying to be more efficient and sustainable. We admit that we are far from where we would like to be. For us, going green is a journey. Not a destination. We also want to ensure the surrounding local communities benefit from our operations and tourism at large. This way they will have a reason to help protect Ulu Muda. We hope you will help us in achieving this goal and look forward to your visit.
MESYM.com is a crowd-sourced platform and a living database for environmental movements in Malaysia. There are many good actions being done out there. Our goal is to bring them together. We connect the green dots.
