Sarawak is the most underdeveloped state in Malaysia, and despite the Sarawak’s natural resources have provided much wealth to Malaysia’s elites for decades, indigenous communities are still lacking infrastructure and basic amenities compared to the rest of the country. Timber extraction, palm oil plantation expansion, and hydroelectric dams have created vast wealth for Sarawak’s powerful and corrupt leaders, but have not led to an improvement in the lives of indigenous people. Rather, resource exploitation has allowed for massive land-grabbing and violation of Native Customary Rights (NCR). Today, only 5% of Sarawak’s original primary forests remain. Rather than bring development to Sarawak’s indigenous people, this development has pushed many of our communities into poverty.
Dam building is the newest threat to the people, rainforests, and rivers of Sarawak. SAVE Rivers was created in October 2011 to fight against the construction of mega-dams. Together, the members of SAVE Rivers are working to spread awareness about the risks that these dams pose to indigenous people. There is an urgent need to initiate a state and national dialogue about the true costs of pursuing large hydropower in Sarawak.
Our Objectives
- Stopping the construction of all mega-dams in Sarawak.
- Strengthen networks and communication between affected communities, individuals, and civil society organizations that are concerned about the dams.
- Share and disseminate information exposing the destructive nature and adverse effects of mega-dams.
- Support activities or events opposing the construction of mega-dams in Sarawak.
This Profile was created by MESYM with information available on the Organization's website.
less...Dear friends in Peninsular Malaysia and elsewhere, on behalf of the Baram people involved in resisting the dams in Sarawak, we in SAVE Rivers and BPAC would like to thank you for all the supports you gave for this campaign. With your kind supports, we in the network have been able to carry out a number of projects for the last two years without being restricted too much by limited funds. For 2014, we have lined up a number of projects for continuing the advocacy works against the proposed construction of more mega dams in Sarawak. Your continuous support would therefore be much appreciated. At the time of writing, there is an urgent need to support those who are manning the two blockades in Baram in order to improve the tents to accommodate them at the sites. Built with the cheapest materials available on the 23rd October 2013, when the blockade started, the tents are now worn out after exposure to the weather. Besides that there is also a great need for improving the sanitary system at the camps. The amount needed is more than we in SAVE Rivers can afford so we need your generous support.
The initiatives by the Dr. Pa Khim Ghee, DAMN THE DAM, BARAMKINI, NGOs and individuals in organising this fund raising drive and their own donation is really appreciated. As stated in their facebooks, donation can be made directly to the following account:
